Turning Lives Around at Sanggar Roda
A long crowded street behind the bustling PuloGadungbus station in East Jakarta, there is a small music studio called Sanggar Roda.
The two-story house has an Internet cafe on the ground floor, while on the second floor is the studios collection of drums, keyboards, guitars and abamboo angklung. This is not just a place where neighborhood children and teenagers can learn to play music. Over the years, it has become a safe haven for those seeking to escape from the hardscrabble streets.
“My main reason for joining Sanggar was to find a good way to spend my free time,” said 20-year-old Wahyu, who has beenoming to the studio since the husband-and-wife team of Nano and Refni opened it in March 2000.
Wahyu said before the studio opened, he did not have a lot of “constructive options” and would often wander around his neighborhood in the afternoons just to pass the time.
Now, Wahyu is part of the Sanggar Roda performance group, composed of the most gifted singers and musicians at the studio.
The group is often invited to perform at malls or company engagements. The money they make from these gigs helps pay for the studios operational costs.
